Just outside Chester, on land owned by a feisty eighty-three-year old Buddhist yoga teacher, Matt Smee and Tom Whitley grow high-quality seasonal vegetables on their three-acre organic market garden site.
The pair met at uni in Chester and had a mutual love for great food. They did start growing back then, on an allotment they acquired in the third year, but Matt Says, “We never really got serious about it, it was just something to do.” And after uni they went their separate ways and started working on different continents. Matt became an aid worker. He lived and worked up in the hill tribe areas of Eastern Burma and was fully immersed in various agrarian societies. Tom headed to London and started work in the finance industry.
