When we joined 1% for the Planet, we noticed that City of Trees were also a member. As the Community Forest for Greater Manchester, their mission is to connect people and place through tree planting and woodland creation, working across all ten boroughs with everyone from local authorities and developers to farmers and housing associations.
They had a powerful story to tell, but needed a way to communicate it quickly, with heart, and in a form that would inspire people to feel part of their mission.
Instead of a traditional volunteering approach, we offered our time through 1% for the Planet to create something City of Trees wouldn’t normally have the capacity to deliver. Over the course of a year, we worked closely with the team to truly understand their roots, their community, and their impact.
The result was a film that flipped the script on typical charity communications. Rather than a “hard ask,” it was designed to connect emotionally, showcasing the authenticity of their work, the people behind it, and the deep connection between Manchester and its natural spaces. The narrative was crafted to celebrate, not just explain, making viewers feel part of the story.
The film gave City of Trees a powerful tool to share their mission in an authentic and emotionally resonant way. It celebrates their people, place, and impact while laying the groundwork for future engagement and action.
By ending with clear pathways to get involved, the film turns inspiration into opportunity, helping more people connect with and support City of Trees.
